- 1). Turn off the power to the old thermostat. This service switch is typically located at the furnace.
- 2). Remove the cover from the old thermostat. The cover should easily pop off from the thermostat.
- 3). Remove the old thermostat by unscrewing it from the wall with a screwdriver.
- 4). Loosen the wires that are connected to the sub-base. Wrap a small piece of masking tape around each wire and label the tape with a pen or pencil. Some thermostats can have five or more wires to connect so labeling them is important for reconnection to the new programmable thermostat.
- 5). Unscrew the sub-base from the wall with a screwdriver.
- 6). Place the new sub-base for the programmable thermostat near the wall. Connect the wires per the manufacturing directions of the thermostat.
- 7). Drill screw-mounting holes for the new sub-base. Gently tap plastic wall anchors in to the holes and then screw the sub-base into the wall with screws and a screwdriver.
- 8). Place new batteries in the thermostat. Snap the cover in place on top of the sub-base. Turn on the service switch to the thermostat.
- 9). Program the thermostat to hotter temperatures or as desired.
