Topsoil Specifications

    Components

    • Topsoil is commonly made up of loam, silt loam, silty clay loam, sandy loam, and humus-bearing clay loam. Three percent or more of the material should be organic matter.

    Nutrients

    • The pH in topsoil needs to be between 6 and 7.5. If lower than this, lime should be added. Soluble salts should be under 500 parts per million.

    Placement

    • Topsoil needs to be spread evenly at a depth of 4 to 6 inches depending on the area. All clumps and debris such as foreign material, twigs and rocks must be removed. It cannot be placed in an area that is muddy or frozen.
