- Blu-Ray was developed by Apple, Dell, Samsung, HP and Sony. A competitor to Blu-Ray, which was on the market simultaneously, HD-DVD, was discontinued in 2008. Since then, Blu-Ray has become the only available high definition video technology (as of March 2009).
- Blu-Ray technology was named after the color of the laser used to read and write its data, which is blue-violet. DVD technology uses a red laser.
- Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD technologies create high definition videos and players, but were backed by different manufacturers. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD technologies were not compatible with one another, creating a split in format support. Once HD-DVD was discontinued in 2008, format support went to Blu-Ray, which is now expected to replace both DVD and VCR technology (see Resources).
- Blu-Ray discs have more than five times the storage capacity of DVD discs. A dual layer Blu-Ray disc can hold 50GB of data, which is enough to record 23 hours of standard definition video.
- While Blu-Ray players are compatible with DVD discs, standard DVD players are not compatible with Blu-Ray discs.
