How to Install an Upnor Thermal Actuator With an End Switch

    • 1). Turn off the heating by setting your thermostat switch to the "off" position. Unplug your base station power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2). Loosen the lower ring of one black protective cap on the top of your manifold with a pair of pliers, and lift off the cap. Screw a provided brass adapter ring onto the manifold intake valve once you have removed each cap.

    • 3). Tighten the brass adapter ring by hand.

    • 4). Press down on the plastic tabs on each side of a four-wire Uponor thermal actuator, and pull the actuator housing away from the green mounting ring.

    • 5). Screw the green mounting ring onto the brass manifold adapter ring. Turn the green ring until you can no longer turn it, but do not use any tools to tighten it further.

    • 6). Place the actuator mechanism housing on top of the installed green ring, and press down on the tabs on each side of the housing. Push the actuator housing onto the green ring, and let go of the tabs once you hear two clicks to indicate that both sides of the housing are properly seated on the mounting ring.

    • 7). Unscrew the fastening screws of your zone module cover, and pull the cover off of the panel.

    • 8). Loosen each screw terminal of the ZCM-3 zone control module. The screw terminals are the four terminals located at the bottom left of the module.

    • 9). Hook the exposed portion of each of the four wires of the actuator around the proper terminal screw as follows: first green or red wire to R1 terminal (first terminal from left); second green or red wire to R2 terminal (second terminal from left); black wire to Y1 terminal (third terminal from left); brown wire to Y2 terminal (terminal farthest to the right). Newer units have red wires instead of green.

    • 10

Plug the base station back into your wall outlet. Turn the thermostat switch back on and turn the thermostat up. Wait six to 10 minutes until you hear a click.

    • 11

Turn down the thermostat once you hear a click. If you do not need to install additional actuators, you can re-attach the cover of your zone control unit and continue to use your Uponor radiant heating system as usual.

    • 12

Install additional actuators by repeating Steps 1 through 10 for up to four actuators per ZCM-3 zone control unit. Make sure to securely hook each wire for each actuator around each screw before you tighten each of the terminal screws in Step 9. Note that you use the same terminals for all four actuators. Re-attach the cover panel of each of your ZCM-3 modules as soon as you have installed all of your actuators.
