  • Civil unrest, riots due to Tia Maria mine controversy -- May, 2015, 60-day state of emergency in Islay Province, Arequipa -- Due to violent clashes between police and protesters, what amounts to martial law has been declared in the Islay Province of the Arequipa Region. Islay is the southernmost province in Arequipa, and borders the Moquegua Region, home to the Tia Maria copper mine. If you are traveling in either region, keep an eye on the news for further developments and potential trouble spots.
  • Flash floods and landslides in and around Chosica -- March 25, 2015, 60-day regional state of emergency -- Flash flooding in Chosica in the inland Lurigancho-Chosica district of Lima has caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The government has declared a 60-day state of emergency in the area.
  • Chikungunya virus alert -- September 21, 2014, 90-day national health alert -- This alert seems slightly strange considering the lack of new chikungunya virus developments in Peru. The alert has drawn swift criticism from certain sectors, who see it as a scare tactic used by the government during a period of strikes by public sector health workers.
  • Heavy Snow in Central Highlands -- July 20, ongoing, 2014 -- Heavy snowfall in the central highlands is causing traffic delays, particularly along the Longitudinal de la Sierra at altitudes above 4,000 meters. The weather is expected to improve on July 22 and 23, but lengthy traffic delays are possible until then.
  • Airline Strike -- June 26 and 27, 2014 -- Maintenance workers for the LATAM Airlines Group are planning to go on strike on June 26 and 27 in an attempt to push for higher wages. Approximately 200 workers will join the strike, seriously affecting all LAN flights (and potentially stopping all LAN flights in Peru for two days). More strikes may follow. Update: According to Reuters, "LATAM Airlines aviation mechanics in Peru called off a two-day strike scheduled to start on Thursday to consider an offer made by the company in eleventh-hour talks... If the majority of union members reject the offer made, a new strike would probably be scheduled to take place in no sooner than 10 days."
