- 1). Know the size of your mattress. Fitted sheets that are too big or small do not fit properly. Look for the sheet size on the packaging: twin, twin long, full, crib, queen, king or California king.
- 2). Choose a sheet that fits the weather outside. Wool or fleece sheets feel more comfortable in cold weather. Buy thinner, breathable fabrics, like cotton, in the summer.
- 3). Read the thread count on the packaging. Different thread counts offer different textures. If you are unsure about what the various thread counts feel like, look for sheet samples.
- 4). Test the sheet fabric with your hands. Gently tug on a sample to see if it's durable. If a tug on the sheet stretches the fabric, it's not good quality. Only tug on sample squares. Damaging unopened products can result in you purchasing the item.
- 5). Read the packaging for treatment information. For example, if you do not want bleached fibers, look for untreated sheets. In addition to the treatment, look for the type of fabric. Some synthetic fabrics, like polyester or nylon, can cause irritation. Cheaper sheets are more likely to contain these fibers.
- 6). Compare the prices of the sheets. Designer sheets, specialty brands and celebrity-endorsed bedding usually costs more than store or less popular brands. If you find a store brand sheet and designer sheet that feel the exact same and want to save money, buy the store brand.
- 7). Buy an easy-to-clean sheet. For example; silk sheets, while soft, need dry cleaned or hand washed. Linens need washed at least once a week. Stick to basic fabrics and save the specialty types for special occasions.
- 8). Buy the sheets and wash them before putting them on the bed. The fitted sheet goes on first, then the top sheet. Tuck the tails of the top sheet under the top mattress.
