Beginner Guitar Lessons: Finding the Right Type of Guitar for You to Play

People who are not well-accustomed to guitars and those who just recently enrolled to beginner guitar lessons might think that there are only two kinds of standard guitars. While there are generally electric and acoustic as the broad types of the instrument, there are actually many sub-types under these two.

Acoustics Type

The guitars that are categorized under the acoustic group depend on a soundboard to create a sound when strings vibrate after they are strummed or plucked. This kind of guitar can be played beautifully even without an amplifier unlike its electric counterpart.

The most common type of the instrument under acoustic group is the classical guitar which is typically used in acoustic guitar lessons in Singapore. The distinguishing feature of this type is its nylon strings which create warm and intense melody. The classic guitar is best played by plucking its strings, but strumming can also be done.

Another type of acoustic guitar is the steel-stringed or flat-top string instrument, which many players claim to have brighter tone and louder sound compared to the classic kind. This type of guitar is often used by jazz and country artists. Even Elvis Presley found penchant in steel-stringed models and used several designs and brands including the Gibson J-200 which he first used in 1956.

Electric Type

Another type of guitar which is widely used in rock and alternative music genres is the electric guitar. As mentioned earlier, it needs an amplifier to create good, loud sound. Students who enroll in beginner guitar lessons can learn the electric kind right at the start of their classes. There is no need for them to take acoustic lessons if they are interested to play loud, wild music of rock and roll.

Generally, there are two kinds of guitars that fall under the category: the standard or lead electric type and the bass guitar. One special feature of electric guitars that teachers disclose during beginner guitar lessons in Singapore is that the strings are typically closer to the fret. Players need not to press down hard as the amplifier does the job in producing loud sounds.

Players can also enjoy creating special effects with their electric guitars so long these are connected to an amplifier. The instrument can also be complemented with different tools like whammy boards and foot pedals to create a larger selection of sound effects.

A partner for the lead guitar, the bass also belongs under the electrics category. This guitar type creates sound typical for musical genres like rock, techno, and hip-hop among others.

Hybrids

Aside from these two major categories, there are also hybrid guitar types like the acoustic-electric guitar and semi-acoustic guitar. These guitars are taught under comprehensive guitar lessons in Singapore. As the name implies, this type of guitar is a combination of the acoustic and electric guitars. However, one highlight of a hybrid guitar is that it uses a piezoelectric pickup to create acoustic-like sounds.
