Remove soil to a depth of 8 inches.feet and inches image by John Sfondilias from Fotolia.com
Remove all the grass, plants and roots in the area where the concrete slab will sit. Dig out the top soil to a depth of 8 inches. Level the ground at this depth and compact it to ensure a solid base. - 2). Build a wooden form that borders the concrete. Fix the form in place with wooden or metal pegs spaced 2 feet apart. The form will prevent the concrete from spreading as it sets, so it needs to be constructed higher than the level of the concrete.

Add a 4 inch layer of crushed rock or gravel to provide a solid foundation and assist with drainage. Ensure this layer is compacted and level; areas of uneven thickness will compromise the strength of the concrete.
