- 1). Plant your yucca tree in a large, heavy container to create balance. Yuccas tend to be top heavy, and a heavy container makes it less likely to topple over. If you're planting the tree in your yard, make sure it has plenty of room, as the trunk can reach 3 feet in diameter. Its height will vary depending on the type. For example, a Joshua tree will reach up to 10 feet. The hardy yucca tree can tolerate any type of well-drained, acidic soil. Use a soil test kit to determine if your soil's pH level is in the correct range.
- 2). Put the yucca in a location where it will receive full and direct sunlight. Yucca trees tolerate high temperatures, and light is very important for optimal growth. If you keep your yucca tree indoors, take advantage of sunny, hot days, and move it outside to absorb the rays. If freezing temperatures are expected, and you cannot move your yucca tree indoors, cover it with a tarp to protect it from frost. Otherwise, the yucca can tolerate cool temperatures.
- 3). Water the yucca tree deeply just as the soil dries out, usually once every three weeks. You may need to water more frequently during the warmest seasons, or not at all if the tree is exposed to occasional rainfall. Pruning is not necessary, but you can cut away the flower with sheers after it has died. Remember that yucca trees grow slowly, only up to 3 inches per year. Fertilizer is not necessary.
