Panic While Driving - How to Stop it

One of the most frustrating experiences those that suffer from panic and anxiety have is having a panic attack while driving a vehicle. For me it was driving on the highway. As soon as I pulled out those familiar feelings hit me all at once. Butterflies in the stomach, racing heart beat and I would get this cold shivery feeling all through out my body that made me think I was going to lose control.

Of course I never did, but the feeling was always there. Even knowing that I had never been in an accident or lost control while driving and having a panic attack did nothing to help prevent them.

For those that suffer panic attacks, the feelings and sensations you get can be unbearable. I described some of my symptoms at the top, but everyone feels panic differently. It can be especially frightening while driving.

Losing control is one of the more common fears people have while driving with anxiety. For some you simply have to get through it to get to work, a loved one or for whatever reason. Put bad weather into the mix, and you've got an anxiety cocktail that's never a pleasant experience for anyone.

However, what helped me was to think about what exactly is going on while I'm having a panic attack. One of the most eye opening realizations that I had was to know that if you're having a panic attack you're actually more aware of your surroundings. Those with anxiety actually have a heightened awareness and because of this you are actually more in control than you think. Consider that there are people on the road driving home from a long day of work, tired and exhausted. They may not be panicking, but their awareness about them is actually lower than someone who has anxiety.

I don't recommend inducing anxiety before you get on the road, of course, that kind of stress isn't good at all, but consider that you are most definitely in control and aware while driving and feeling anxious. It might help alleviate the fear.

Realizing that simple fact helped me to overcome my anxiety while driving on the highway and today I am much happier to get behind the wheel of my car. You can do it too! Concentrate on the fact that you're probably one of the safest drivers on the road and you will get through it.
