- 3G service offers faster data transfer rates, enabling simultaneous data and speech services and other functions. 3G includes data rates of at least 200 k/bits. A k/bit (kilobit) is equivalent to 1,000 bits, or units of digital information, transferred per second.
- 3G systems offer higher security performance than their 2G (second generation) predecessor. 3G systems enable user equipment, such as a mobile phone, to authenticate the network it is connected to. This helps ensure the user is connecting to the intended network as opposed to an impostor.
- 3G mobile broadband, currently the most widely used broadband standard, enables high-speed Internet access at a performance rate, or speed, between 1 mbps and 14.4 mpbs. Mpbs (megabits per second) is a unit of data transfer equivalent to 1 million bits, or units of digital information, per second. This higher transfer rate enables such services as video calls, or calls that include video images, and mobile TV, which enables television broadcasting signals to be displayed on a mobile device such as a smart phone.
