- 1). Sand the clay pot's exterior to smooth out any rough areas. Sand lightly to avoid removing excess material.
- 2). Paint the pot's interior with a water sealant if you intend to use the finished pot for planting. This will prevent moisture from seeping through to the pot's exterior.
- 3). Pour the acrylic paint you want to use as your base color onto a paper plate.
- 4). Load your foam brush with paint and brush it onto the pot's exterior. Completely cover the exterior with one coat of paint.
- 5). Allow the first coat of paint to dry, and then apply a second coat and allow it to dry.
- 6). Position a leaf-shaped stencil on the side of the pot and tape down its edges with painter's tape.
- 7). Pour the paint color you intend to use for the pot's leaf decorations onto a paper plate.
- 8). Dab a piece of dampened kitchen sponge into the paint.
- 9). Stipple the paint-covered sponge over the stencil's cut-out area; cover the exposed area with a solid coat of paint, but don't stipple on too much, or your leaves may have messy-looking edges.
