Psychological problems are believed to be the cause of premature ejaculation.
Therefore no known organic diseases involving the male reproductive tract or any known lesions in the brain or nervous system, are believed to be the direct cause of premature ejaculation.
The areas in which premature ejaculation affect the most in the male's body are as following: •Penis •Prostate •Seminal Vesicles •Testicles •Portions of the central and peripheral nervous system, (the one that control the male reproductive tract and organs) Historically PE has been considered a psychological disorder.
A possible theory is that males are conditioned by societal pressures to reach climax quickly.
Reasons for this could be, fear of discovery when masturbating as teenagers, or during early sexual experiences, or with a prostitute.
This could be a pattern of rapid attainment or a quick sexual release, so it becomes difficult to change epically in marital or long-term relationships.
The simple fact that female arousal and orgasm require more time than the male arousal is becoming more rapidly recognized, and this may result in increased recognition and definition of premature ejaculation problems.
Looking at PE from a evolutionary perspective, logic may dictate that a male who can ejaculate rapidly (quickly) would be more likely to succeed in fertilizing a female.
The genes of a male who ejaculates rapidly would be more likely to be passed on to succeeding generation, unless of course ejaculation is so rapid that it occurs before intermission.
Speaking in a primitive sense, a male who could not complete the fertilization process quickly might be pushed away or possibly killed by competing males, this being due to his vulnerability during intercourse.
Although most research suggest that premature ejaculation is a psychological problem (granted it is debatable), many researchers have found differences in nerve conduction/latency times and hormonal differences in males who experience PE.
A common theory is that some men have hyper-excitability or oversensitivity of their genitalia, thus preventing down-regulation of their sympathetic pathways and delaying of the orgasm.
There are a group of nerves located in the lumbar spinal cord, that have been identified as the possible generator of ejaculation.
These nerves are thought to be linked to the excitatory and inhibitory dopamine pathways in the brain, these play a significant role in sexual behavior.
Because of these finding it is believed that a foundation for possible medications, that specifically target the delay of ejaculation could be created.
