Dangers for Young Women at Night in a Foreign Country

    Theft

    • To help prevent theft, always be aware of your surroundings and stay in well-lit areas. Carry a purse that fits securely across the body, use zippered or Velcro pockets, or use a money belt that fits securely inside your pants. Never carry a lot of cash, and put your password and credit cards in a secure location at your hotel. Carry a dummy wallet with expired credit cards and only a few dollars; if someone tries to rob you, hand over the dummy wallet. Avoid wearing flashy jewelry and designer clothing with prominent labels. You are more likely to be a victim of theft if it looks like you are rich.

    Assault

    • Assault against foreign women happens, although it is not always reported. To help prevent a possible assault, never walk back to your hotel or hostel alone at night; ask a friend to accompany you, or take a taxi. Learn the word for "help" in the native language, or carry a whistle. Be aware of your surroundings, travel in well-lit areas and do not walk down dark alleys. Choose carefully when inviting people back to your hotel or going home with someone.

    Getting Lost

    • Losing your sense of direction puts you in a dangerous situation, especially at night. You may end up in a place without transportation to your hotel, or someone may see that you appear vulnerable and try to take advantage of the situation. Always pay attention to landmarks, street signs, buildings or stores while moving from place to place. Write down the name and address of your hotel or destination in the local language in case you need to ask for directions.

    Intoxication

    • Being intoxicated changes your perceptions and makes you less aware of your surroundings. Be careful when drinking local spirits with which you are not familiar. It is easier for people to follow, rob or assault you if you are intoxicated. Watch your drink at all times to keep someone from putting something in your drink. Be careful that no one follows you into a taxi or your room. Since it is easy to leave behind possessions such as a wallet or camera when drinking, secure and check those items often throughout the night to prevent loss or theft.

    Unwanted Attention

    • If traveling in a conservative country, dress modestly and do not show a lot of skin. Cover your shoulders, and avoid wearing short skirts or shorts. Be aware that some men in foreign cultures view Western women as "easy." Dressing inappropriately invites unwelcome attention. When traveling to a Muslim country, bring a scarf to cover your head. Consult with a local embassy to find out if head scarfs are required for all women. In conservative countries, it is not common to see women traveling alone. Consider wearing a fake wedding ring if you are not married, and avoid making direct eye contact with men; this can help deter some unwanted attention.
