- 1). Dusting on a regular basis is a great defense against dust bunnies. Damp dusting is best as dry dusting only scatters the dust. Dust tables, desks and electronics. Don’t forget about your ceilings, window blinds, walls and window sills. Dust these areas often and well. Try dusting on a daily basis, one or two rooms per day so that you aren’t overwhelmed by the task. Once you are on a schedule and the dust is under control, maintaining a relatively dust-free home is easy.
- 2). Vacuuming is a must. All of the carpets and mats must be vacuumed on a regular basis. Again, split this chore over several days so it isn’t so daunting. Vacuum slowly, picking up as much dust as possible. Don’t forget to vacuum your draperies as well. A hand-held vacuum may be easier than having to change attachments on your regular vacuum. Be sure to move all the furniture when you vacuum. Just because you can’t see under the furniture doesn’t mean that dust hasn’t collected there. Cushions and pillows should be taken outdoors and beaten to remove the dust. Be sure the doors and windows are closed when you do this so that the dust doesn’t blow back inside your home.
- 3). Clean all cooling and heating vents in your home thoroughly. These areas are havens for dust and they also provide dust with the means of motion. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for cleaning the vents. Having them professionally cleaned at least once a year will reduce dust in your home. Depending on the type of vents you have, you may be able to remove and clean them yourself. Doing this monthly will greatly reduce the dust in your home.
- 4). Use humidifiers in your home. This will also help reduce the dust in your home. Air purifiers will also help and in drier climates and seasons, you can keep a pan of water barely bubbling on the stove. You can even add a few drops of mint or another fragrance to the water. The fragrance doesn’t help eliminate dust, but it will make your home smell nice. Watch the level of the water carefully and be sure to turn off the burner if you leave your home or when you go to bed.
- 5). Grooming your pets helps to control dust. Be sure to bathe and brush them regularly to keep hair and dust out of your home. Don’t forget to check their feet for dirt before they come inside. Most pets can be trained to stand on a towel or mat near the door so you can check their feet before they come inside.
- 6). Remember to check your own feet also. Shoes that are dirty should be left outside until you can clean them. Welcome mats should be as close as dirt and dust gets to the inside of your home.
