Lavender

• Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) has been used for centuries in sachets and potpourris to freshen the air. Sprigs are put in closets to add fragrance to clothes with the added benefit of repelling moths. According to "The New Healing Herbs," modern research shows that compounds found in lavender oil will repel insects. A centuries-old practice was to strew the flowers throughout the home. You can create a lavender sachet, or dry and hang a bunch of lavender flowers in a bundle in the closet to repel moths.
  
  

Sweet Woodruff

• Sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum) is a fragrant perennial with a long history as a moth repellent. To keep moths away from wool rugs, scatter the herb beneath the rug, or use sweet woodruff to make a sachet to hang in the closet.
  
  

Southernwood

• The Southernwood herb (Artemisia abrotanum) is also known as "old man," "lad's love" and "lover's plant." Add leaves of the perennial southernwood plant to potpourri to use as a moth repellent.
  
  

Mugwort

• You can use the leaves of the mugwort plant (Artemisia vulgaris) to make a moth repellent. Also known as "wormwood," "chrysanthemum weed" and "St. John's plant," use the dried leaves of the mugwort herb to make a sachet or hang at the top of your closet.
  
  

Tansy

• Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) is a fern-like plant with leaves that will repel moths. Use the leaves of the herb either in a sachet or strew them through the closet.
  
  

Bay Leaf

  Bay leaf is the aromatic leaf of the bay laurel tree (Laurus nobilis). Use the leaves either fresh or in dried form to repel moths. To use as a moth repellent, scatter a few leaves throughout the pantry or in the closet.

  Natural ways to repel moths are considered a safer option to products with synthetic ingredients, and as a result, herbs are continually being added to the list of moth repellents. Additional herbs to repel moths include caraway for use in a potpourri, the dried leaves of feverfew to use in a sachet, and the leaves of the melilot to strew inside a closet. Use the flowers of the santolina plant to repel all types of insects, including moths. Alecost is an herb used since medieval times, and its leaves emit a strong camphor smell that make it useful as a repellent.
