- After decades of civil unrest, Nicaragua boasts one of the lowest crime rates in the Americas. However, because of civil conflicts, Nicaragua was eluded by the massive tourist-industry expansion in Central American countries such as Mexico and Costa Rica. As a result, much of the country's ecologically-diverse landscape remains unspoiled.
- Tour operators offer guided tours of wildlife preserves, tropical "dry" and rainforests, and nature parks located along the beaches of the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean. Well-known eco tours include boat rides, once enjoyed by the author Mark Twain, along the San Juan River to the Indio Maiz Rainforest. Other popular tours and adventures include hiking on the slopes of the country's 50 volcanoes, surfing and sailing.
- Because of Nicaragua's reputation as an off-the-beaten-track travel destination, tourists can relax in relatively quiet and peaceful surroundings. Although the majority of Nicaraguans speak Spanish as a first language, eco tour operators provide English-speaking guides to help tourists learn about the country and to negotiate goods and services from the locals.
