Each year the world of interior design comes bubbling with fresh ideas, novel trends and innovative approaches and none so more than 2013. From floral-inspired design to colour schemes aimed directly at making a living room appear to be bigger, from bringing out and buffing up the brass to adorning a home in burnt orange, there are some pretty definite must haves when it comes to decorating and interior design this year.
Take a look at some of the essential interior design trends and ideas for 2013.
Bring out the brass
If you are a brass lover but have been reluctantly inclined in recent years to grudgingly put your beloved brass away in a box in the attic through fear that your favourite ornament has past its sell by date, then you will be happy to learn that this year brass is making a comeback!
Brass is back with a vengeance this season and is brighter and shinier than ever. This rich metal in its many different sculptural guises is experiencing a major revival this spring, says the leading UK contemporary designer, New i.d., in its new online magazine.
So what are you waiting for? Bring down that dusty box from the attic and start buffing up that brass!
Embrace bold floral patterns
The subtleness of delicate patterns in pastel hues of 2012 is now so passe, as this year the savviest of interior designers and homeowners are reaching for the large floral prints used over a myriad of fabrics, furniture and fittings.
Rugs, wallpaper and fabrics should be emblazoned with flowers and the more brightly coloured the better, to be accompanied, of course, with plenty of vases of the flourishing flower arrangements.
Expand space by utilising colour
The colour scheme of a room has long been associated with affecting an inhabitant's mood and emotions but this year colour is being used to generate a feeling of greater space.
Those wanting a larger living room without the money, time or resources to fork out on an extension, are advised to combine neutral colours with toned down primaries. Place bold colours, in moderation, in a room with a predominantly neutral colour scheme to create a greater sense of space. These bold colours can come in virtually any form, such as being tantalising painted at strategic points on the walls or incorporated onto brightly coloured rugs or cushions. As long as such snippets of vivacity are toned down with neutral colours they will bring a sense of space to even the most cramp of rooms.
Bring on the burnt orange
Of course if you have decided to attempt to psychologically extend your room with a savvy use of colour, no doubt you will be deliberating which colour to opt for to set against a more neutral background.
Similar to the world of fashion, every year and even season has certain must have colours in interior design and this year, particularly this season, burnt orange is a colour demanding much of the decorating limelight.
As New i.d. states about this 1970's associated shade in their online Magazine:
€Burnt orange has been resurrected into a top design colour for this season."
As well as helping utilise space, colour this year is aimed at providing a sense of stability and reassurance in a time of financial instability. As New i.d continues:
€Burnt orange signifies a tranquillity and certainty, welcoming messages in the climate of intense political and economic volatility."
