Buying A Mattress: A Short Guide

If you're not sleeping well and have decided to buy yourself a new mattress to help you be more comfortable, then there are a few issues you need to consider.
Different companies will, of course, market their products differently, but it's worth bearing in mind that most of the manufacturers - that is, the people who make the products which are then sold on - rarely vary, meaning the most profound difference is down to the marketing.
This means it's possible to get a great product without spending a fortune.
There are various types of mattress for you to consider and the choice means it's possible to get the one that's right for you.
Open coil spring mattresses are popular and are made by creating a frame out of intertwined high tensile steel, which forms the springs.
These are probably the most common mattresses, but it's also possible to get variations made out of one continuous piece of steel, which are great for flexibility and molding to your shape.
When buying a spring mattress, you also need to consider the issue of firmness or 'gauge' as it's known in the industry.
The gauge measurement is what tells you whether a mattress is firm or soft.
So, for instance, a mattress of 15 gauge will be fairly soft to sleep on, whereas 12.
5 gauge is firm and so could be ideal for people looking for a bit more support and sturdy base to sleep on.
People's preferences vary, so the only way you can really tell you have the right gauge is to try it out.
Spring coils aren't the only mattress option available - memory foam is increasingly popular.
This material was developed by NASA for astronauts to protect them from the massive G-force their bodies are subjected to, and it morphs around you as your body moves.
This is particularly great if you have back problems as the foam moves to fill any vacant space, ensuring you always have the perfect amount of support.
It lets you distribute your weight evenly, meaning you don't put any undue pressure on any part of your body.
As another alternative mattress style, you could consider the latex option.
Made from natural latex, which is obtained from the rubber tree, these mattresses are non-toxic, hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, which makes them great for allergy sufferers - particularly if you have dust allergies or suffer from asthma.
Latex mattresses are available in an open cell structure which is fantastically breathable, giving you a clean and healthy sleep environment.
Once you've chosen your ideal mattress, all that's left to do is get a good night's sleep in comfort.
