- Samsung produces a range of portable video players and has created a video file format for videos meant for its players. The format is similar to the AVI video format; all files in this format carry the SVI file extension. Samsung also produces Samsung Media Studio, a PC-based application that converts videos in other formats to the SVI format. The file structure is that of a wrapper containing a video stream encoded in the MPEG-4 format.
- Mimio produces a range of interactive communication tools for teaching. The products of Mimio center around turning a standard whiteboard into a projector screen and input device. The Mimio Capture ink recording system reads standard marker pen markings on a whiteboard and writes these to a computer file. The files used by the ink capture system have the SVI file extension.
- "Red Faction" is a series of computer games produced by THQ. The SVI file extension is attached to files written in the SVG file format. This format is a method of describing graphics in XML. XML is the Extensible Markup Language.
- The three applications using the SVI file extension are not compatible. A file written by one of the three applications cannot be opened by one of the others. This presents a problem for Windows users. Windows has a default programs database that associates applications to file types. This enables it to know which application to open when a user double-clicks on a file in a directory listing. However, the system uses the file extension to identify the file type. Only one application can be assigned to each file type; so Windows will associate one of these applications with all three file types. If a computer has two or more of these applications installed, this creates a problem. The association process occurs when an application is installed. This means that if more than one of these applications is running on a computer, the last installed will be associated with the SVI file extension.
