Effective Communication is Everything in the Treatment of ADHD

One of the biggest problems with treatment for ADHD is that 'it does not work'.
Why, you may ask.
The answer is miscommunication.
You see, an expert in ADHD can make an accurate diagnosis of this disorder, but more often than not they failed to explain to the affected families how he/she had arrived at the diagnosis and why it is vital for them (families) to follow his recommended treatment plan to the dot.
Without proper explanation,s many recommendations will not be followed, and the treatment plan fails.
Another problems with some doctors or clinicians is that they cannot explain their evaluations, diagnosis and treatment plan using layman's terms.
So it is no wonder that medications and recommendations are often chucked aside by their clients because they don't understand a thing.
Basically these are the things clinicians must do when dealing with ADHD.
This information is useful for parents with ADHD kids as well because if the doctor or clinician is "dumb" (metaphorically speaking), then they can take the initiative and grill the doctor or clinician instead.
Don't worry about it because like it or not you are paying them for a service so make your money pay! 1.
Explain the background of ADHD and state clearly what is wrong with the child you are examining.
Tell the parents the causes of the problems and how it can be treated because on existing medical understanding of this disorder.
2.
De-mystify the different types of assessment procedures used to diagnose the child, such as why quationnaires and observations were necessary.
3.
Be clear about the severity of the problem the child is experiencing, how it relates to other family members and its overall impact on the child.
4.
Advise the parents to use the scientific knowledge that you have and integrate it to the ones they have about child to make the overall treatment programme more effective.
5.
Explain the many risks involved in relation to the many treatment methods available, especially on the short and long term side effects.
6.
Make sure that the parents understand that their kids are not attentive not because they are lazy or anything like that.
Its just that there is an imbalance of hormones in their brain which they have no control over.
7.
Share with your clients the things to look out for at home or in school because science have recorded quite a number of things which can help ADHD children function effectively at home, in school or in social surroundings.
So, in a nutshell, effective communication will go a long way in helping the millions of families out there who are having a torrid time coming to grips with what they are experiencing with their ADHD kids.
