- 1). Look for the valve box housing the main water meter located between your home and the city water supply. The box usually is black with a green lid in newer residential neighborhoods, and steel in older neighborhoods. Use a curb key to disconnect the water supply to your home immediately after discovering the burst pipe.
- 2). Find the location of the burst pipe in the wall. Water may be flowing from behind and under the drywall, or the wall may appear wet and feel soggy.
- 3). Cut away the damaged drywall with a drywall utility saw. Continue to cut the damaged drywall from the wall until you remove all the wet and damaged drywall to gain access to the burst pipe.
