- 1). Apply to an apprenticeship program for forklift driving. One of the most reputable apprenticeship programs is with the International Union of Operating Engineers. The training program garners national recognition and lasts for three years. In addition to training, with the apprenticeship program you also have the opportunity to earn an income while you learn. Your rate of pay is approximately half of a journeyman's rate and will depend on you local prevailing market rate. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you gain certification as a forklift operator.
- 2). Attend and graduate from a school offering forklift-driver certification, if you are unable to secure a spot in a good apprenticeship program. One such school well recognized in the southwestern United States is the Forklift University. Such schools typically offer full driver training and certification for inexperienced forklift operators and basic certification courses, to include OSHA certification for experienced drivers. Courses usually last anywhere from one week to a couple of months and certification is offered once you complete and pass all courses. Expect to learn how to maneuver and operate a forklift, as well as perform maintenance on the equipment. Fees for such courses vary, but an average cost around $2,000 for completion and certification.
- 3). Apply to the Job Corps if you are unable to attend a school due to proximity or associated fees. The Job Corps offers a forklift driving certification through its facilities maintenance program with minimal associated fees. You will need to apply for admissions into the Job Corps and gain acceptance to attend the program. Once you complete the program, you will gain certification as a forklift operator.
