- 1). Begin your cover letter with a brief introduction. Include your name, the place where you saw the job advertised and a one-sentence summary of your qualifications. "I have three years' experience as a massage therapist."
- 2). Include specific details to show you've done your research. Mention if you've visited the studio before, and if you know any clients or employees. Explain why this knowledge makes you interested in the job: "Jane Smith told me your employees work in a relaxed, team-oriented environment. At my last job I worked with a staff of 15, so your business sounds like a good match for my experience."
- 3). Visit the studio's website or call to see what kind of treatments it offers, and match this information to your skills: "I've noticed that you offer Swedish massage and Shiatsu. I have training in both." If your skills don't seem like a perfect fit, be creative: "I see you don't currently offer Thai massage. My skills can help you expand your business and reach new clients."
- 4). Highlight what makes you unique. Small salons and studios often don't have a dedicated administrative staff, so accounting skills and customer service experience can make you an attractive hire. Mention specific skills that will make you stand out, such as fluency in a second language, the ability to perform a manicure in a pinch or a talent at making promotional materials such as flyers and information sheets.
- 5). Don't cover holes in your resume or make excuses for having lost a previous job. The cover letter simply gets you in the door---make it one hundred percent positive, and sell yourself. Wait until the interview process to explain any negatives in your career history.
- 6). Display your contact information prominently, either in a header or at the bottom of your letter. Make it easy for the employer to contact you---include a home and cell number, your email address and a mailing address. Do the same in your résumé. If you have a professional-looking business card or a salon flyer from your previous job, include them in your application package.
