- 1). Take a 12-inch cutting from a tree that is at least two years old. Cut a branch approximately 5-inches in diameter. Take fig cuttings in early spring.
- 2). Remove the lower leaves.
- 3). Dip the cutting in rooting hormone and stick it in a pot with organic, well-drained, moist soil. Leave only the top one or two buds exposed. Cover the plant with a clear, plastic top to create a miniature greenhouse effect, helping to retain moisture.
- 4). Place the pot in a damp, moderately warm, sunny location. Let the soil dry out, then water again. After the second watering, keep the soil lightly moistened.
- 5). Watch for growth. After the cutting appears to be growing and the roots are established, begin acclimating the fig seedling to the outdoors. Take the plastic lid off and place the fig seedling outside, for just an hour or two to start. Gradually, over the course of two to three weeks, increase the time to a full day. Bring the growing bush inside at night.
- 6). Transplant the fig tree the following spring.
