- 1). Understand bankruptcy law before you search for bankrupt Kansas corporations. A bankrupt corporation can file under two chapters: 7 or 11. These are regulated and judged by the U.S. government. With Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the "company stops all operations and goes completely out of business. A trustee is appointed to 'liquidate' (sell) the company's assets and the money is used to pay off the debt," according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Under Chapter 11, a business is given an opportunity to reorganize and attempt to make a profit. A corporation is still in control of its operations under Chapter 11, but all major financial decisions must be approved by a bankruptcy court.
- 2). Visit the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Kansas website. This should be your first stop to locate the latest information on Kansas corporation bankruptcy filings. The left-hand menu will have links to a variety of information regarding the District of Kansas court, from court calendars to a judge's opinion.
