How to Change Windows XP Startup Options

    • 1

Open the Start Menu by clicking "Start" in the lower left corner of the desktop.

    • 2

Click "Run" then type into the field "msconfig." The "msconfig" command will open the System Configuration Utility.

    • 3

Click "OK" to open the System Configuration Utility.

    • 4

Select a startup option in the General tab. The default configuration for your computer is to perform a Normal Startup, which loads every driver and service. Diagnostic Startup will resemble Safe Mode where only the basic drivers and services are active. The Selective Startup option lets you limit startup items even more. Leave the configuration set for Normal Startup for now to avoid any problems later on.

Click the "Startup" tab. The Startup tab gives you a list of start items that you can uncheck to disable. Only uncheck an item that you recognize and know that disabling it would not impair your computer.

    • 6

Click "Close" when you are finished. System Configuration will give you the option of restarting your computer. If you want any change you made to take immediate effect, restart your computer. Otherwise, restart at your leisure.
