- 1). Prepare a rooting mixture by combining peat moss, sand and plant food. These should be mixed together in equal portions for best results. Moisten the mixture and place into a rooting tray.
- 2). Cut a section of the stem that is approximately 6 inches long using sharp pruning shears. The cutting should be taken from a new-growth part of the plant.
- 3). Remove all leaves and buds from the bottom third of the cutting and cut the remaining leaves above this section in half.
- 4). Place the root end of the cutting into a rooting hormone to begin the growth of new roots.
- 5). Push the end of the cutting into the prepared potting mixture and press soil around the stem to stabilize.
- 6). Water the cutting with a light spray of water. Do not allow the water to pool in the potting mixture.
- 7). Cover the cutting with a plastic bag to hold the moisture in and create a greenhouse effect. To assist with this, place the tray in a warm area but out of direct sunlight.
- 8). Check the cutting after four weeks for roots by gently pulling on the stem. If resistance is felt, roots are growing. Continue growing the campsis vine cutting until the roots are at least an inch long and the plant is strong enough to be transplanted outside.
