Inter-Access Point Protocol

    History

    • The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) defined standards for Wi-Fi networks through its 802.11 Working Group (WG). However strong competition in the consumer market forced manufacturers to race ahead of any official standards. The IEEE project is attempting to catch up with the development of proprietary systems. Wi-Fi standards are grouped under the code 802.11. Supplementary standards have an additional letter. IAPP is known as 802.11f.

    Function

    • The standards aim to bridge between existing products developed along proprietary methods. For this reason, they do not promote connection between Access Points but propose a format of attributes to be stored on a device temporarily by the first AP to be picked up by the next AP.

    Features

    • The standards aim to ensure continuity of connection when a device roams between APs. The protocol also includes methods for handing over security measures between APs.
