How to Troubleshoot an Auto Defrost Refrigerator

    • 1). Determine if the auto defrost is working correctly. Look behind the refrigerator for frost on the floor covering or the back wall above the evaporator coils. Frost indicates that the unit is experiencing a problem.

    • 2). Turn the refrigerator timer manually until it is completely turned off. See if the tubular heater or the glass heater is hot. If so, you need to replace the defrost timer.

    • 3). Determine if the condenser is clean and the condenser fan is functioning correctly, if your refrigerator is warm. Check the refrigerator door to see if it's closed correctly.

    • 4). Check the refrigerator light to make sure it turns off when the door is closed. If it stays on, the light switch is defective and needs to be replaced.
