How to Bind a Book With Paper

    • 1). Measure and cut two pieces of chipboard to fit the pages of the book. Glue decorative pages to the front of both chipboard pages using a paintbrush and craft glue. Let the chipboards dry naturally for one hour.

    • 2). Measure and mark a half-inch space down from the top edge and up from the bottom edge of the chipboard pages. Measure and mark half of the space that remains between the first two marks. When you're done, each chipboard page should have three markings wheres holes will be made.

    • 3). Place one chipboard page on the top of the remaining pages and one chipboard page on the bottom of the stack. Bundle the stack of the pages for the book together tightly by gently tapping the stack on a table. Secure the bundle of pages with binder clips on the opposite edge of the markings.

    • 4). Puncture the pages with the awl. If the bundle is too thick for the awl to penetrate, divide it in half and punch the awl through the markings on the card stock page. Bundle the first stack, punch holes using the awl tool and then bundle the second stack and punch holes in it. When finished, reassemble all the pages in correct order.

    • 5). Apply PVA glue to the spine of the book with a paintbrush. Make the coat thick enough so it is sticky and will hold the pages together. Clamp the glued bundle of pages together and allow it to dry for 4 to 5 hours.

    • 6). Make a spine cover for the book by measuring and cutting a sheet of heavy card stock the dimensions of the book. For example, for a book that is 8.5 inches by 11 inches, the card stock needs to be cut at 8.5 inches by 11inches. Next, measure the thickness of the book to be binded. For example, the book may have 50 pages that measure 2 inches thick.

    • 7). Measure 1 inch from the edge of a piece of card stock and fold with the bone folder (to make the spine cover wrap around a book that is 2 inches thick). Then, measure 2 inches and fold the card stock paper with the bone folder. Finally, measure 1 inch from the fold line and cut the card stock paper with the utility knife. If the book were 1.5 inches thick, then the spine covering would be 1 inch wide, fold, 1.5 inches, fold and then 1 inch, cut.

    • 8). Apply PVA glue to the backside of the folded card stock paper. Wrap it neatly around the spine of the book. Clamp the entire stack with the wrapped card stock paper with butterfly clips or clamp. Let the book dry naturally overnight.
