How to Customize Contact Colors With No Prescription

    • 1). Make an appointment with your eye doctor for a contact lens fitting. Be sure to clarify with the office staff that you are interested in cosmetic colored contacts, even if you do not require vision correction. The cost of the exam is the same whether or not you need a prescription because the doctor will still do the same testing and measuring.

    • 2). Decide before the appointment what type of color change interests you. Lenses are available to change all eye colors; even brown eyes can appear blue or green with cosmetic contact lenses.

    • 3). Consider getting more than one color or style. In addition to color-changing lenses, contacts are available that enhance eye color: blue can become aqua; brown can become hazel. There are even lenses available to give your eye an entirely different appearance, such as a cat eye or crazy, hypnotic designs. These are sometimes referred to as "Halloween lenses."

    • 4). Choose lens colors that enhance your skin tones and makeup for a more natural look. If you have dark hair and skin, consider green or violet lenses. For lighter skin or hair, more subtle colors work well. If you wear eye makeup, try a contact lens color that is different from your eyeshadow; for example, a lavender eye shadow and a brown lens or brown shadow and a blue lens.

    • 5). Return to your eye doctor for all follow-up appointments after receiving your color contact lenses. Even if there is no correction in the lenses, your doctor will need to monitor the fit and health of your eyes. The follow-up exams are usually included in the initial exam fee.
