- 1). Look at personal work performance. Before talking to the employer, it is important to determine whether a raise is deserved or not. Employees who are constantly taking personal phone calls, arriving late or otherwise create problems for the company are not deserving of a raise because they do not focus on their work. On the other hand, a hard worker who is constantly striving to improve the company or his personal work performance is deserving of a raise.

For example, an employer might give more vacation time or provide further training. Consider options beyond the basic addition of money.
- 6). Set an appointment with the employer. Treat the request for a raise like a business meeting. Set up an appointment so that the employer can prepare. Tell the employer that the subject is a raise so he can be ready for the issue.
- 7). Go to the appointment and remain calm while requesting a raise. Set forth the arguments determined previously. Speak respectfully to the employer.
