  Vermilion, Alberta, is a small town 119 miles east of the provincial capital of Edmonton. Founded in 1902, the town is named after the red clay found in the river valley area. It is home to Lakeland College, which specializes in agricultural and emergency training. The Vermilion Provincial Park offers an extensive trail network suitable for hiking, biking, horseback riding and in winter, cross country skiing. Hotels in the area are small and low key, in keeping with this rural Canadian location.
