Why Do Maltese Sleep So Much?

    Maltese Puppies Need to Rest

    • Maltese puppies, like many puppies, can sleep as much as 15 to 18 hours per day. They sleep between play sessions to allow their body the energy it needs to develop. If your puppy was recently weaned and has difficulty sleeping at night, it will sleep more during the day.

    Adult Maltese Like to Relax

    • Maltese that are comfortable in their homes and have all their needs met will sleep a lot to pass the time. If you provide a quiet, comfortable space for Maltese between activities, they are likely to spend the time sleeping. There is nothing to worry about as long as the dog is active between rest times, eating its meals and displaying signs of good health.

Older Maltese Sleep to Stay Healthy

    • Maltese dogs can live well into their teen years. As they age, they return to the sleeping habits of puppies. They can sleep as much as 18 hours per day; this is normal if they don't exhibit any signs of illness, such as rejection of food, vomiting or diarrhea. Make your older Maltese comfortable and allow it the rest time it needs.

    Sick Maltese Need Sleep

    • If you think your Maltese is sick, consult a veterinarian immediately. While Maltese love to sleep at almost any age, they will be active and playful during wake times. They will eat and defecate regularly. Sick Maltese will be lethargic even after sleeping for many hours.
