- 1). Go to an open area or field and look at the landmarks in the distant horizon around you. Stand straight and raise your arm in front of your chest so that the watch with the compass dial is positioned just below your face.
- 2). Look at the compass dial and adjust the position of your wrist until the needle or pointer (with red tip) in the middle of the dial is able to float freely and point to the north. Twist your wrist several times to ensure the pointer moves freely and returns to the same position as an indication that it is pointing to the north.
- 3). Turn around clockwise very slowly without moving your arm. Maintain the level of your arm so that the pointer is able to freely move while you are turning. Keep on turning until the tip of the pointer points directly to the printed letter "N" on the compass dial. Stop as soon as the pointer faces the printed letter "N."
- 4). Look at the land mark at the distant horizon in alignment with the needle. Note that you are now facing north and that if you walk forward, you will be walking north. Look at the landmark to your right and note that if you will walk towards that direction, you will be walking east. Look to your left and note that walking towards that direction will take you west. Look directly behind you and know that the direction directly opposite north is going to take you south.
- 5). Look at the compass dial and note that once the printed letter "N" is aligned with the pointer, the other letters designating south, east, and west point towards their respective directions.
