- When going camping throughout the big state of Texas, it becomes important for visitors to research what type of camping experience they enjoy. Texas divides into seven regions: Panhandle Plains, Prairies and Lakes, Piney Woods, Gulf Coast, South Texas Plains, Hill Country and Big Bend. Each area offers distinctive features and a unique camping experience via landscapes, hiking, rock climbing, fishing, hunting or wildlife viewing. - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers operates many of the Texas lakeside campgrounds spread throughout the state. its mission consists of managing, conserving and protecting the natural resources and ecosystems at Corps water resource projects. Many of the U.S. Army Corps lake campgrounds offer fishing, boating, marinas, picnic areas, trails and swimming areas. Some of their lakes under its supervision include Lake Texoma, Whitney Lake, Ray Roberts Lake, Sam Rayburn Dam and Reservoir, and Lewisville Dame and Lake.
- Known as the largest lake in Texas and 12th largest in the United States, Lake Texoma is situated along the Oklahoma and Texas border. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the lake attracts approximately six million visitors annually. These lakeside campgrounds offer anglers great fishing opportunities for reeling in striper, white bass, crappie, catfish, and largemouth and smallmouth bass. The lake offers both private and public campgrounds. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers alone provides approximately 15 campgrounds with more than 800 campsites. Activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding, swimming areas, playgrounds and picnic areas.

903-465-4990 - The Prairies and Lakes Region, usually a transitional area for much of Texas wildlife, offers hilly landscapes and elevations ranging from 300 to 800 feet above sea level. Ray Roberts Lake State Park provides campgrounds for one of the largest lakes in the area. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, Ray Roberts Lake spans 29,000 acres and provides homes for fish and waterfowl. The park divides into two different units that offer camping. The Isle du Bois Unit features 53 walk-in developed sites, 14 equestrian campsites and 115 with electric and water hookups. The Johnson Branch provides 33 hike-in primitive sites, 50 tent sites, and 104 campsites with water and electrical hookups. These campgrounds offer fishing, boating, windsurfing, hiking, horseback riding and biking.

940-637-2294 - Lake Livingston, located in the Central Texas Region, provides numerous camping facilities that appeal to just about every outdoorsman. Some of the campgrounds include 21 premium sites on or near the water, 21 campsites with full hookups, 56 with water and electricity, 10 screened shelters and 32 campsites with water only. The lake itself spans 84,800 acres and the surrounding park offers visitors numerous recreational activities while camping, which include picnicking, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, swimming and horseback riding. Fishermen particularly enjoy the surrounding campgrounds for their notable white bass and catfish fishery. However, anglers can also catch a good amount of crappie, striped bass and sunfish.
