How to Live in Wall Tents

    Non-Winter Months

    • 1). Sweep out the entire floor space area each day. A wall tent tends to accumulate more debris and outdoor detritus due to the location. Keep it swept out so rodents are not attracted to the inside of the tent.

    • 2). Keep the bed at least three feet off the floor. Because wall tents are drafty, keeping the bed too close to the floor creates colder sleeping conditions. In addition, a wall tent has loosely closed walls and rodents get inside. Keep the bed off the floor to keep rodents out of the bed.

    • 3). Set up a dehumidifier during the hot and humid months. This is particularly important for canvas wall tents as humidity increases the likelihood of mildew growing on the tent canvas. If you do find mildew on the canvas, wash it off with a mixture of water and bleach. It is important to keep mildew off the canvas as it erodes the fabric, smells bad and creates a health hazard.

    • 4). Store food in animal-proof lockers or cabinets. If your wall tent is in bear country, consider investing in a bear-proof locker and store non-perishable food outside the tent in the locker.

    Winter Months

    • 1). Assemble a floor of fire bricks that the wood stove will rest on. Do not have the wood stove within four feet of any canvas wall. Vent the woodstove through the center of the ceiling on the tent. Most wall tents have stove pipe flaps in the center of the ceiling.

    • 2). Place a large cast iron pot on the woodstove and keep it 3/4 full of water at all times during use. This acts as a humidifier during the winter months, something necessary when burning wood and living in the dry cold months.

    • 3). Roll up discarded towels into tight cylinders and place them at the base of the tent walls to prevent wind or cold air from penetrating the gaps between the floor and walls. When the door is closed, place the towels against the door jamb.
