- The GE refrigerator uses a water filter in the refrigerator compartment to remove debris, minerals and other particles from the water supply before making ice or dispensing the water. However, if the filter was recently installed or the refrigerator is new, sometimes no water will come out when the dispenser is initially pressed. This is due to air in the system and will correct itself if the dispenser is pressed for about three minutes to bring water into the system.
- Even if ice is being made and deposited into the ice bin in the freezer, the water dispenser will not operate if the control lock has been engaged. This lock is meant to help prevent use of either the water or ice dispenser by children or others who should not access the appliance. When it is engaged, the “Lock” button will be illuminated. To release the lock, press “Lock Control” and hold it for three seconds until the light on the “Lock” button goes out.
- If a large amount of water was recently dispensed from the unit, the water may temporarily stop dispensing because the reservoir is empty. Wait awhile and allow enough time for the reservoir to refill before trying to dispense water again.
- While it is an unusual problem, the water in the reservoir will not dispense if it has frozen due to extremely low temperatures. This is more likely if users have set the freezer control to the lowest possible settings or the refrigerator is stored in low temperatures, such as outside or in an uninsulated garage. If a frozen reservoir is suspected, GE should be contacted for service at 877-432-2737.
