How to Build a Container Water Fountain

    • 1). Gather supplies and pots. You will need one large decorative pot to use as a reservoir, and an accompanying plastic pot. You'll need at least one other decorative pot and accompanying plastic pot. This will build a two-level fountain. For each additional level you will need an additional decorative pot and accompanying plastic pot. Each decorative pot should be at least an inch shorter and narrower than the last. Each plastic pot should be small enough to fit into its decorative pot.

    • 2). If your ceramic pots aren't glazed on the inside, paint them with a coat of Dry Lock sealant.

    • 3). Seal the inside of all the ceramic pots with water seal.

    • 4). Close the bottom of the pot you will be using as a reservoir. Cut a piece of thin plastic in a circle about twice the size of the hole you are going to close. With silicone sealer, glue the plastic circle over the hold on the outside of the pot. On the inside of the pot, fill the hole you just covered with the silicone sealer until it reaches the bottom of the pot. Let the silicone dry for at least six hours, preferably overnight, before continuing.

    • 5). Cut a long piece of tubing from your supply---long enough to reach through all the pots to the top of the fountain.

    • 6). Drill a hole in the bottom of the decorative and plastic pots/containers so the feed tube can pass through. Drill two holes of the same size into the side of each pot and container.

    • 7). Drill a smaller hole or just cut a notch near the top of the reservoir pot for the electrical wire to go through. Put the pump at the bottom of this pot. Run the pump wire along the side of the pot and through the notch or hole near the top.

    • 8). Turn the first plastic pot upside down and push the tube through the hole in the bottom so the container slides down the tube and covers the pump at the bottom of the largest pot. Use the silicone sealer to caulk the hole around the tubing, even if it's a pretty tight fit.

    • 9). Take the feed tube and push it through the hole at the bottom of the next decorative pot. Slide the pot down so that it rests on the bottom of the inverted plastic pot covering the pump. If you have the correct size pots, the rim of the first decorative pot should cover the bottom of the second decorative pot.

    • 10

Put the next plastic pot upside down in the last decorative pot, pushing the feeding tube through the hole at the top (the inverted bottom of the container). Slide the plastic pot so it rests on the bottom of the decorative pot. Push the feeding tube through the hole at the bottom of the next decorative pot. Slide the decorative pot so it rests on the bottom of the last inverted plastic pot. Continue these steps until you have as many levels as you like until you reach the final top pot.

    • 11

Cut the tube about an inch from the top rim of the top pot. Fill this top pot with decorative rocks or beads until it reaches the top of the tube. You may have to cut more of the tube depending on the pressure of the water so that it doesn't spray too high.

    • 12

Fill the reservoir pot with water. Plug in the pump. Hold your hand over the tube opening on the top pot so that the water fills the top pot and muffles the flow of the water.

    • 13

Turn on the pump. Once the water fills the top pot and the tube is cut to the right length, you should have more of a bubbling effect than a high spray of water.
