Travel & Places Passport Requirements

How do I Acquire a Visa?

    General Visa Application Requirements

    • Although the specific rules and regulations depend on the country, visa applications require a passport and identification to prove one's identity, citizenship and legal status. These documents typically include a birth certificate, marriage certificate and/or government-issued ID.

Tourists and business travelers occasionally must show enough proof of income and capacity to travel by providing documents like bank statements and income tax returns. Supporting documents may also include certification of employment, school records, land titles and car registrations.

    Visa Waiver Programs

    • The United States, along with about three dozen countries, participate in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) to enable citizens to travel for tourism and/or business purposes without applying for visas. Some VWP travelers are required to have valid authorizations through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). The traveler's passport must be valid for six months past the expected stay in the destination country.

    Visa Types

    • In general, there are two visa types issued in a country: non-immigrant visas for travel on a temporary basis; and immigrant visas for travel to live permanently on the country of destination. Non-immigrant visas include tourist, business, student and work visas. Visas can also be used for single-entry, or one-time use; double-entry, or two-time use; or multiple-entry, for use until it expires. Multiple-entry visas are usually valid for about 10 years.
