The Fastest Way to Renew Your Passport

    • 1). Contact the U.S. Department of State Passport Agency nearest you. There are more than 20 agencies nationwide, so check the State Department's "Passport Agencies" page to find the one closest to you. (see resource 1) From the information provided on each agency, find out if you need an appointment for an in-person visit. Many agencies require an appointment, but not all do. (see reference 2) Make an application appointment if necessary.

    • 2). Print and fill out Form DS-11, the "Application for a U.S. Passport." While there is a renewal application available, Form DS-82, you will need to fill out DS-11 for an in-person appointment. You can obtain the form from the U.S. Department of State's "First Time Applicants" web page. (reference 2)

    • 3). Assemble the materials you need for your renewal. This includes proof of citizenship, proof of identity, two passport-size photos, and a copy of your identification document. Gather your application fee, with the extra expedited fee. You can find the most current fees at the Department of State's "Passport Fees" web page. (see resource 2)

    • 4). Go to the passport agency nearest you at your scheduled appointment time, or during walk-in hours when available. Turn in your materials and your application. Many centers can renew your passport within five days.
