- 1). Go to a place where you can make a wide circle with your car. A parking lot or open field is a good location. You're going to need room to move, and you don't want to create a traffic hazard while you're doing so.
- 2). Put the compass into calibration mode. This is different for each compass, but the steps for your particular model will be listed in your owner's manual.
- 3). Turn on all the electronics and functions that will normally be on in the car: lights, radio, heater and anything else you'll use. The compass needs to calibrate with all the interference present so that later it doesn't create an issue in finding direction.
- 4). Make two complete revolutions in a circle. Once you've driven in two circles, stop the car and take the compass out of calibration mode. The cardinal points and directions the compass found during the calibration are now set and ready for use while you drive.
