- 1). Use a tape measure and hand or power saw to cut four two-by-fours for the frame around the top of your pickup truck bed. This frame will fit on top of the sides of the tuck, so cut the wood so it encompasses the entire frame. Do not attach the fourth end board yet, in order to leave the bed of the truck open. Attach metal angle braces on each corner with the drill and wood screws.
- 2). Construct another frame using the two-by-fours the same size as the first frame. This time, include the left-out end piece on the back of the truck. Put this frame on the top of the first frame. Again, reinforce the corners by attaching the metal angle braces. The height of the double frame is up to you, but for campers' comfort, make it tall enough so that a person can sit up comfortably underneath.
- 3). Cut seven stud boards from the two-by-fours for the side walls. These will span the height between the two frames. Place a stud on each corner, one in the center of the front and one in the center on each side. Secure the stud boards to the frame using the drill and wood screws. Leave the area around the tailgate open. Add additional studs for the windows on the sides if desired.
- 4). Measure and cut the plywood sheets to cover the end, top and sides of the constructed frame. Secure the plywood pieces using the drill and wood screws. Cover the heads with a rubber sealant once attached.
- 5). Use a jigsaw to cut holes for windows in the sides of the camper shell. Make sure your holes are large enough for the window and frame. Use a square to make sure the hole is even. Install the windows based on the manufacturer's instructions. Add rubber sealant around the window frame for a secure fit.
- 6). Cut one piece of plywood to fit the back camper opening. This sheet needs to fit inside the opening from the tailgate top to the camper's roof. It should also cover the entire width of the back. Use the jigsaw to cut the hole for the rear window.
- 7). Insert the rear window into the opening. Secure the window in place with screws and sealant. Screw three gate hinges on the top of the plywood and overlap them to the camper roof.
- 8). Place the latch on the bottom of the back hatch assembly. Attach the catch onto the tailgate. Place the constructed camper on top of your pickup and secure the shell to your truck by attaching C-clamps from the inside. This will allow for easier removal when needed.
- 9). Add carpet to the lining of your truck bed for comfort. Consider painting the plywood and adding a wood sealant so rain or snow does not damage the plywood sheets.
