- 1). Consult the tow vehicle's operator's manual and locate the preinstalled, four-pin trailer harness; typically, the harness is attached to a chassis rail toward the rear on the driver's side, or coiled behind the bulb housing of one taillight cluster. The harness wires should be color-coded white to ground; brown to taillights, running lights and license plate light; yellow to left turn and brake light; and green to right turn and brake light.
- 2). Route the four wires to the location of the seven-pin connector, then attach them as follows: white to terminal one, brown to terminal three, yellow to terminal five and green to terminal six.
- 3). Connect the blue brake-actuating wire from the brake controller to terminal two.
- 4). Connect a red or black wire from the tow vehicle's battery to terminal four. Install a 40-amp, in-line fuse within six inches of the battery but do not fit the fuse into the fuse holder.
- 5). Splice the wire serving the tow vehicle's backup lights and run a purple wire to terminal seven (in the center). Use electrical tape to insulate the splicer.
- 6). Fit the 40-amp fuse in the in-line fuse holder. Hook up your trailer and have an assistant help you test the sidelights, brake lights, turn signals and backup lights. Use a volt meter to test the 12-volt charging wire. Calibrate the brake controller according to the manufacturer's instructions on a level surface that no other motorists are using.
