- 1). Unscrew and remove the side panel from the computer's tower. Locate the hard drive. Detach the wire connector that connects the hard drive to the computer.
- 2). Set the hard drive to the "Master" mode. Examine the small pins on the side of the drive that have a plastic jumper in between them. A small diagram beside them indicates the jumper position for the various modes. Most hard drives have various pin positions for different settings, so read the diagram thoroughly. Move the jumper switch with a pair of tweezers and reposition it to the "Master" setting.
- 3). Open the external hard drive enclosure. Slide the hard drive into the enclosure and then close it. Connect the enclosure's power and data connections to the hard drive, according to the instructions. Every enclosure's connections are slightly different, so read the instructions carefully. Screw the enclosure shut.
- 4). Plug the enclosure into an available wall socket. Connect the enclosure's USB cable into an available USB slot on a working computer.
- 5). Click "Start," then "My Computer" on the computer. The new hard drive will appear. Double-click the drive. Drag any files you want to save to the new computer.
