- 1). Gather evidence. If you have been receiving bills or statements for credit cards or other lines of credit--especially in other states--that you never applied to, collect those bills in a secure folder and don't throw them away. They can be used as evidence.
- 2). Call the police's fraud department. Most police departments have an active fraud ("bunko") investigation unit that deals with fraud. The police will ask you for the evidence you have gathered in Step 1, as well as your name and personal information. Sometimes this information is shared with the FBI or other law enforcement organizations.
- 3). Go to the police station. You will probably need to do this to assist in the investigation. You should bring with you two forms of picture ID and the files you have with the fraudulent credit bills. The police will probably issue you a report you can use to help get your life back on track. Keep a copy of this report in a safe location for future use.
