Air Force Furniture Acquisition Procedures

    Family Housing

    • Government furniture may be procured for temporary use at several Air Force bases in the United States, and at overseas bases for new arrivals with dependents or those that are soon leaving the base. This furniture is intended to last the occupants of a house until their belongings arrive or until they leave the base. For CONUS (Continental United States) bases, furniture is usually provided by submitting an application to the housing office when the tenants will need it. Overseas bases provide furniture automatically, if it is available, as soon as tenants move in or supply PCS (permanent change of station) orders to their housing office to assist the family in as smooth a move as possible.

    Workplace

    • Workplace furniture such as desks or office chairs will occasionally need to be replaced. Some units may ask you to submit an application for the new piece of furniture through the housing office to expedite the process. The housing office will relay your request to the furniture supply warehouse, which will then get back to you whether or not they have any furniture that may be appropriate for your needs.

    Long Term Retaining

    • Long term retaining of government furniture is rare in CONUS locations with family housing, but very common overseas due to weight limit restrictions in moving items and space constraints within the housing areas themselves. If at a United States base, ask to speak to your housing office coordinator about potentially keeping the items until your move. They may direct you to a second-hand yard sale held from the furniture warehouse as items become scratched and visibly worn. These items are usually obtainable for low prices. If you are at an overseas location with a low weight limit, you may qualify to keep your government furniture for the length of your stay at that base. A low weight limit depends heavily upon the ages of your dependents and the number of them; speak to your local housing office for clarification since this does strongly rely on a number of factors. Your housing office will ask you to supply the date you are to leave the base on a form when you are accepted to keep your government furniture, and contact you between 15 to 60 days from your scheduled leave date to set up an appointment to take the furniture back.
