ADA Accessible Parking Standards

    Significance

    • ADA requires parking lots with up to 100 spaces to have one handicap-accessible space for every 25 parking spaces. Parking lots with 101 to 150 spaces need to have five handicap accessible spaces. Those with 151 to 200 spaces need six handicap spaces, 201 to 300 require seven handicap spaces, 301 to 400 need eight handicap spaces, 401 to 500 require nine handicap spaces, 501 to 1,000 need at least 2 percent of the total spaces be handicap accessible and any parking lot with more than 1,001 spaces requires a minimum or 20 handicap spaces plus one more for each 100 spaces over 1,000.

Medical facility parking lots need to designate at least 10 percent of their parking spaces as handicap accessible. Facilities that specialize in serving people with mobility conditions are required to ensure that at least 20 percent of their spaces are handicap accessible.

    Geography

    • Handicap-accessible parking spaces have to be located as close as possible to the facility's handicap-accessible entrances. If the facility has more than one accessible entrance, parking spaces can be dispersed among the accessible entrances.

    Features

    • At least one of every eight handicap spaces must be van accessible. If the parking lot has less than eight handicap spaces, one of the spaces must be van accessible.

All handicap-accessible spaces have to be at least 96 inches wide and located on a level surface. All spaces must have signs indicating that they are handicap accessible.
