- 1). Calculate. It is a good idea to figure out how much mulch you will need before buying it. It will save you endless trips to the store to buy more. To calculate measure the square footage of your garden, multiply it by .33 (3-inch depth of mulch) and then divide that number by 27. The answer is the cubic yards of mulch needed for your garden.
- 2). Visit your local garden center. Find out what mulches they have available. This is a good opportunity for you to talk with the sales person about what type of mulch is best suited for your needs.
- 3). Pull weeds. Before adding your mulch make sure your garden is weed and debris free. One of the many benefits of mulch is its weed control. However, if you add mulch on top of all ready grown weeds it makes it harder to keep them under control.
- 4). Water the plants. Watering before laying your mulch down will help the plants retain moisture.
- 5). Add the mulch. Using your hand, spread 3 inches of black mulch around your plants, shrubs and trees. Adding too much mulch could smother your plants.
